Holy Family

The Holy Family is perhaps the most powerful and iconic image from the story of Jesus’ birth as told in the Christian Christmas narrative:

“So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and laid him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.”

Throughout Christian history, the birth of Jesus has been depicted in many forms. The custom of portraying the scene in a nativity setting has endured for centuries and continues to be cherished across Europe. The Holy Family—Mary, Joseph, and the baby Jesus in the manger—forms the heart of the nativity. These three figures harmonize perfectly as an ensemble and can also be displayed beautifully on their own as a meaningful, contemplative Christmas decoration. Mary is shown in prayer, draped in a blue cloak, while Joseph appears in deep orange clothing. As described in the Christmas story, the newborn Jesus is placed gently in a manger, symbolizing humility, hope, and divine grace.
