The Three Wise Men, also known as the Magi from the East, come from the Christmas story told in the Gospel of Matthew. In the Bible, they are described as “astrologers” or “wise men” who were guided by the Star of Bethlehem to the stable where Jesus was born. Each of them brought a special gift for the newborn Savior.
Balthasar is depicted kneeling, with blond hair and a crown. He wears a blue cloak and holds his characteristic gift in his hands — a censer filled with frankincense.
Although Balthasar, Caspar, and Melchior were never canonized, January 6th has become their feast day. To this day, they are regarded as patron saints of travelers, pilgrims, merchants, and innkeepers. Balthasar’s companions Caspar (HUM 2230/J) and Melchior (HUM 2230/G) complete the trio of the Wise Men from the East.
The tradition of the “Star Singers” (Sternsinger) also originates from them. On January 6th, children go from house to house singing carols and offering blessings. They mark the doors with the letters “C+M+B”, which stand for “Christus mansionem benedicat” — Christ bless this house.
The Three Wise Men are an inseparable part of the Nativity scene, just like the Holy Family itself.
