The donkey is one of the classic nativity figures — and the same is true for the Hummel collection. This grey-furred animal is a biblical symbol closely tied to the Christmas story from the very beginning. Beyond the tale of Mary and Joseph, many well-known figures in the Christian scriptures also kept donkeys — as beasts of burden or even as what we would now call household animals. In the Old Testament, donkeys were also considered a measure of a person’s wealth — the more animals one owned, the greater their prosperity.
Together with the lambs (HUM 2230/P and HUM 2230/O) and the calf (HUM 2230/M), the donkey is an indispensable element of the nativity scene.
