Hum 2230/B – Josef

“And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, to be taxed with Mary, his espoused wife, who was with child.”
(Luke 2:4–5)

In Christian tradition, the honorable Joseph is known as a carpenter who never left Mary’s side. Together they lived in Nazareth – the place where the Annunciation by the Archangel Gabriel took place. Joseph was chosen to raise the Son of God together with his betrothed. It is recorded that the people regarded Joseph as the father of Jesus, even though he did not conceive the child himself; Jesus came into the world through the work of the Holy Spirit.

Joseph is depicted with light hair and wearing a brown or dark orange robe, holding his walking staff in hand. His arms are outstretched – an open posture symbolizing the welcoming of Jesus into the world.
