They were the first visitors to the stable: the shepherds from the Christmas story. With their own eyes, they saw the newborn Christ Child and then spread the news of the Savior’s birth. It was an honorable task – especially since shepherds were often regarded as poor folk. In fact, many high Christian offices were once held by shepherds.

Our Hans is the only shepherd who has made himself comfortable sitting in the stable. Relaxed, yet filled with awe, he clings to his shepherd’s staff as he takes in the sacred scene.
