Hum 2412 – Star Singers

Every year, around the Feast of the Epiphany, the tradition of the Sternsinger (Star Singers) comes to life in Catholic regions of Germany. Dressed as the Three Wise Men – Caspar, Melchior, and Balthasar – children go from house to house, eagerly awaited by families. They sing carols and bless the homes they visit, writing their blessing in chalk above the doorway so that the household and its residents may be protected from harm. Where the Star Singers have already been, you’ll see the inscription: “20C+M+B+19.”*

But these children do more than bring joy and blessings. Every year, thousands of young Star Singers collect donations to help children in need, often braving snow and bitter cold to do so. In honor of the world’s largest charitable solidarity movement, the Hummel Manufaktur created the expressive figurine “Star Singers.” This touching piece was a collaboration of artistry – master sculptor Marion Huschka, together with Anette Barth and Tamara Fuchs, combined their talents to bring this scene to life.

Our little Star Singers have been on their journey for a long time. The smallest of the three, weary from the trek, leans gently against his taller companion, his censer of precious incense already lowered in fatigue. The older boy supports him with a protective hand, holding him steady while singing his carol with all his heart. Caspar, the third of the group, looks on with tender concern at the little one: will he find the strength to finish the final round?
